Stanzie Tooth uses landscape as an entry point to create her work. Tooth finds inspiration in the art historical dialogue surrounding the sublime, landscape as psychological signifier. Many of her compositions feature figures that seem to be absorbed by or made of their natural surroundings. Through these compositions nature becomes and emotional extension of the form. In her recent series Tooth pushes further into abstraction. The treatment of the surface leaves the viewer searching for the recognizable; a horizon line, a tree, a face, only to be brought back to wavering lines of colour.
